Vinay Shankar Tiwari is one of the many politicians who switched sides ahead of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. He left the Bahujan Samaj Party to join the Samajwadi Party just weeks before Assembly elections in the state. He won the 2017 state election as a BSP candidate from the Chillupar Assembly constituency. He was with the BSP for more than a decade. It is pertinent to mention that he is the son of strongman and politician Hari Shankar Tiwari, who represented the Chillupar seat six times in a row. Vinay Shankar had contested the Lok Sabha elections against Neeraj Shekhar (Ballia) and Yogi Adityanath (Gorakhpur) in 2008 and 2009 respectively but lost both the elections.
