Ayodhya is one of the five Assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad district. It is one of the five Assembly seats that make up the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency. The Ayodhya Assembly constituency is a general seat, i.e. it is not reserved for SCs or STs. In the 2017 Assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate Ved Prakash Gupta had won the seat with a margin of 50,440 votes or 23.19% of total valid votes. Gupta is again contesting from the seat and will again take on SP's Tej Narayan Pandey. Tej Narayan had won the Ayodhya constituency in the 2012 UP Assembly elections. BJP's Lallu Singh represented the seat five times in a row in 1991, 1993, 1996, 2002 and 2007.
