Shivpal Singh Yadav is the founder of the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya) and a sitting MLA from Jaswantnagar Assembly seat in Etawah. He has been representing the seat since 1996 (five terms). Yadav resigned as a minister from the Akhilesh Yadav Cabinet in 2016 to form his own party. He had contested the elections from the Firozabad Lok Sabha seat in 2019 but lost the elections miserably. However, he managed to dent the prospects of SP's Akshay Yadav who lost against BJP's Chandra Sen Jadon. He is an elder brother of SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and was once considered his close confidant. Shivpal was even appointed as president of the party's state unit in 2009. He entered into an alliance with the Samajwadi Party ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections and will contest the polls from Jaswantnagar again.
