Fazilnagar is one of the seven Assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar district. It is one of the five Assembly seats that make up the Deoria Lok Sabha constituency. It is a general seat, i.e. it is not reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) or Scheduled Tribes (STs). In the 2017 Assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate Ganga had won the seat with a margin of 41,922 votes or 19.55% of total valid votes. Swami Prasad Maurya, who won the neighbouring Padrauna seat as the BJP candidate, has joined the Samajwadi Party and will be taking on BJP's Surendra Kushwaha from the constituency.
