Ghosi is one of the four Assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh's Mau district. It is one of the five Assembly seats that make up the Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency. It is a general seat, i.e. it is not reserved for SCs or STs. In the 2017 Assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate Fagu Chauhan had won the seat with a margin of 7,003 votes or 2.90% of total valid votes. However, he left the seat after his appointment as the Bihar Governor. BJP's Vijay Rajbhar won the seat in the 2019 bypoll. Dara Singh Chauhan, who was with the BJP in 2017, has joined the Samajwadi Party and decided to contest from Ghosi this time.
