Shoaib Bashir

England
Bowler
Off break 22 yrs.

Shoaib Bashir is an English cricketer who plays as a right-arm off-break bowler. Born in October 2003 in Chertsey and raised in Woking, he was encouraged by his uncle to pursue cricket from a young age. He played club cricket for Guildford and age group cricket for Surrey and Middlesex before signing a contract with Somerset. His big break came in the 2023 season after he impressed in the Second XI fixtures. He made his T20 Blast and first-class debuts for Somerset in June 2023 and quickly made an impact by helping his team win the T20 Blast title that same year. Despite his tall frame, he naturally gravitated towards spin bowling and spent the winter playing club cricket in Australia to hone his skills.

His journey to international cricket is a fascinating modern story. While playing his very first county championship match for Somerset a short video clip of him bowling a beautiful over to the legendary Alastair Cook went viral on social media. England captain Ben Stokes saw the clip and immediately forwarded it to head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key. Trusting his raw potential the selectors handed him a maiden call up for the Test tour of India in early 2024 even though he had only played six first-class games. Although his arrival in India was briefly delayed due to visa issues related to his Pakistani heritage he eventually joined the squad and prepared for the biggest stage of his young career.

He made his highly anticipated Test debut against India in February 2024 and quickly proved the selectors right. In just his second match, he claimed his maiden five-wicket haul by taking 5 for 119. This made him the second youngest overseas spinner to take a five-wicket haul on Indian soil. Later in the summer of 2024 he was chosen ahead of his veteran teammate Jack Leach to play against the West Indies. During the second Test of that series he took another brilliant five-wicket haul, claiming 5 for 41 and becoming the youngest England spinner to achieve this feat at home. His rapid rise was recognised when he won the Young Player of the Year at the 2024 Cricket Writers Club Awards alongside a brief T20 loan spell at Worcestershire.

The years 2025 and 2026 brought plenty of ups and downs for the young spinner. Early in 2025, he went on a short loan to Glamorgan for red ball match practice as he found himself down the pecking order at Somerset. Despite struggling there, England backed him for the May 2025 Test against Zimbabwe, where he took a career-best 6 for 91 and became the youngest Englishman to reach 50 Test wickets. Later in July 2025, he bravely bowled with a broken finger to take the match-winning wicket against India at Lords, though the injury ruled him out of the remaining summer. He returned to action for the 2025 to 2026 Ashes tour in Australia but had to wait on the sidelines as the team lost the first three Tests. Seeking regular playing time, he officially left Somerset and joined Derbyshire on a two-year contract in January 2026.
