Satpal Maharaj, the Uttarakhand government's minister of tourism, PWD, culture, and irrigation, is an MLA from the Chaubattakhal Assembly seat. In the 2017 Assembly elections, he defeated Congress party's Rajpal Singh Bisht by 7,354 votes. He has also represented the Garhwal constituency in the 11th and 15th Lok Sabha from the All India Indira Congress (Tiwari) and Congress party respectively. In 2014, he left the Congress party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He had been a member of the Congress party until 2014 when he accused the party of disregarding the misery of victims of the state's natural disaster. Satpal Maharaj was a key figure in the founding of Uttarakhand, and he is also said to have approached former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and other senior leaders for the same. He is the son of Hans Ji Maharaj and Rajeshwari Devi. He is also the founder of Manav Utthan Sewa Samiti.
