Govind Singh Kunjwal is the sitting MLA from the Jageshwar Assembly constituency. He represented the constituency in 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017. The former Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker is also known as 'Pahar Ka Gandhi'. Kunjwal is one of the state's few legislators who served in the Uttar Pradesh legislature prior to the formation of Uttarakhand. He was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly as a Congress nominee in 1993. Kunjwal has been a vocal critic of the ruling parties, claiming that despite having a two-engine administration, development has stalled and that the people of the state are experiencing basic hardships. He was strongly chastised for his role in the Uttarakhand political crisis in 2016 when nine Indian National Congress MLAs switched their support to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is again contesting from Jageshwar.
