Yashpal Arya is one of the most prominent Dalit leaders of Uttarakhand and a six-time MLA. He has been an unbeaten Uttarakhand legislator in all four Assembly elections since the state was created. He was elected from Mukteshwar in 2002 and 2007 and subsequently from Bajpur in 2012 and 2017, the constituency he is currently representing. He represented the Khatima Assembly constituency in 1989 and 1993 when the seat was a part of Uttar Pradesh. Arya, who was once a president of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC), also served as the Transport Minister in the Pushkar Singh Dhami Cabinet. He was also included in the Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat ministries. He left the BJP and joined the Congress party in October 2021. Notably, prior to the Uttarakhand Assembly elections in 2017, he left the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was the Speaker of Uttarakhand Assembly from 2002 to 2007.
