The diamond industry of Surat, one of the major sources of foreign revenue and livelihood for millions, has hit a rough patch. A number of polishing units are in the grip of recession, with the fear of closure looming large for some.  Amid festival season, the default on payments amounting to Rs6 crore by Godhani Gems, a city-based diamond processing firm, has delivered a terrible blow to the gems business. Finding no other option to repay their debts, the firm’s owners – Ramesh Godhani and Vinod Godhani – have decided to shut their factory and offices located in Surat and Mumbai.
